Working Space, One Thrid of a Slice
Project type
Group Show
Date
18 April 2024
Location
Hypha Studios, London
What is an artist’s working space? What fraction of the significant whole does it hold in their practice? How does its absence and presence impact an artist’s work? How do alternate spaces influence 'the rest of the slice'? Can we turn spatial limitations into a source of limitless artistic exploration and expression? Are the existing opportunities truly enough?
Working Space: One-Third of a Slice is an attempt to reflect on seven emerging artists' nuanced struggles with space and consequential interventions. The artists' multidisciplinary practices draw on inter-relational themes, spanning drawing, painting, video, sound, sculpture, embroidery, textiles, installation and performance. While they are exploring multi-faceted issues like identity politics, socio-cultural influences, and decolonisation, what connects them is the spatial exploration that brings their struggle to navigate the tight constraints of studio and exhibition spaces to the fore.
In a regenerated locality, Hypha Studios is a repurposed site built upon a former industrial area within the East Village in Stratford. Hosted here, Working Space highlights transformation and reimagining as central to exploring and expanding artistic boundaries. Whether phenomenologically or pragmatically, the varied body of works enters a spatial dialogue—liminal, physical, and psychological.
